Last night we were called and invited to an impromptu gathering in the student lounge for root beer floats. Todd started off a round of the Happy Birthday song for Canaan to try and convince him to come out…. so far nothing, but it did give him the hiccups!
We tried to see how many of us could squeeze onto the two couches in the lounge, Debra decided to not get in on it, she knew how hard it would be to get back up :o)

…even when it is hard for me to accept! I was really praying all weekend that the baby would come. I kept talking to God telling him that I knew in my head that he has His perfect plan for the arrival of Canaan… but in my heart this weekend seemed so perfect. My primary midwife was on call and my mom was here and so many other details. It all seemed just dandy in my mind, not to mention getting onto the road of healing and having our son in our arms.
But today when we went to the midwives office, God gave me a huge and obvious reminder of the fact that he sees the big picture and I don’t!! My midwife, Mel, said to me… I am so glad you didn’t have your baby this weekend, it would have been really bad. Come to find out, most of the midwives were gone out of town this weekend and there were only two midwives left on call or available at all… And guess what… they had 5 babies born in 3 days. My poor friend and midwife didn’t sleep the whole weekend.
God knew that I would not have gotten the attention I needed for the delivery. I sure didn’t know. I love that God put me through a weekend of pleading with him to show me so gently and loving that HE KNOWS! I feel so much more at rest now, which is completely what I should have been before. Even though I have sleepless nights of pain and long days that drag on in utter exhaustion he has my best in mind!
Thank you GOD!

Another week has come and gone since our last trip to Owensound to see our midwife. We left at lunch time today for our appointment and took Deb’s mom with us. It was a fun appointment, very informative. We talked about the different stages of labour and what to watch for. Though we would much rather be listening to his cry, we did get to listen to his heartbeat! Click the link below to listen in:
Compare to his heartbeat at 26 weeks and 17 weeks.
Nothing too much to report yet, the midwife said that Debra was still dilated 2cm but had effaced some more from the last time we met with her. Good signs, but as always it’s a matter of waiting! Though it has been very tough for Debra, it’s been encouraging for me to see her attitude throughout all of this and see her trust in God. He has taught us so much and over and over reaffirms in our hearts that He is our sufficiency. We are thankful that it is He who is in total control of this whole situation and that it isn’t left up to chance and man’s plans and intervention. Thanks again for your prayers and support!

We’re going to be very experienced house sitters! Back in January we house sat for Debra’s aunt and uncle for a few weeks while they visited family in the States. Today we started house sitting for Barry & Chris Challinor, a staff couple here at NTMC. Barry & Chris are off to Papua New Guinea to speak at a conference and will be gone for a month. I know it has nothing to do with our experience and everything to do with being pregnant, I suppose they thought that Debra would appreciate the bath tub - and they were right! Debra is looking forward to having a tub to soak in for the final stretch of the pregnancy and also for recovery afterwards. My parents get home tonight from their vacation to Curacao and though we want the baby to come as soon as possible I know that my parents will be glad that they won’t be out of the country when Canaan comes!

Last night we had a staff/student social here at NTMC. We played a game called Bunko, which I thought I had never played before but after starting the game, memories started coming back of a game that Deb and I played in Bible School when her mom came to visit. Deb’s mom was here for this game too! Though it is pretty much a game of luck, it’s a lot of fun because of the interaction you get with so many different people. Nearly
every round you move tables and play with new people. Prizes were given out for the most wins, most losses, longest losing streak and longest winning streak. Guess what? Debra won a prize! And in which category? For the most losses - BUT, in Bunko it takes no more skill to do that than it does to have the most wins. She won a gift certificate for Tim Hortons. Everyone brought great snack food for half time, Jim’s favourite were the Oreos. Thankfully Debra was able to stay for the entire game, moving around is actually the best thing for her kidney, so Bunko was just what the doctor ordered for her tired out kidney.

Well, Canaan still hasn’t made his arrival yet. We are waiting! =) God is really teaching us patience and waiting on his timing and plan. It’s so great to know that he has a big plan and sees things that we don’t. I am comforted each day knowing that he has it all under control. It is still really hard to wait. I am so glad to have a wonderful support base. My wonderful husband, who cares for me physically and emotionally, continually encouraging me. I have my mom here! I love chatting with her during the day about all sorts of things, she is so encouraging to me… by the way she made us dinner today and yesterday. It is so great to sit down to a freshly prepared meal…. but I didn’t make it! =) I also have all the staff and students here at NTMC… who happen to be my friends. They are all so great… Constantly checking on us, seeing how we are and what they can do.
I am already very emotional, being towards the end of the pregnancy and all… But when I think of all the blessings I have in my life, it’s hard not to cry out of thankfulness.
Thanks everyone! I love you all.
Debra

My mom is here! I am so excited. It’s been so nice to have her here and to spend time with her. Guess what!! She scrubbed my kitchen today!!! That was so great. She is taking such good care of me. =) She also brought us awesome gifts from home. She brought us a few blankets for the baby (that she made!), Classic Pooh material for decorating the baby room, curtains for our bare windows, American snacks, baby clothes and more. Its been so fun decorating the baby room with my mom, she made really neat curtains for the baby room. I really wanted the theme to be Classic Pooh, but I have had a really hard time finding Classic Pooh up here in Canada. Now, we have navy blue curtains with a Pooh accent! =) I am so happy!
We also received my Permanent Resident card in the mail today. It was so great to get it… its the fanciest ID card I have ever seen. It looks like it came from Japan or something. =)
Well off to bed….

Hello all! This afternoon our midwife came by to “sweep” my membranes. There are many names for this procedure… “stripping the membranes” “stretch and sweep.” No matter. =) So she explained everything to us. Just so you know… the first, second times don’t always work, actually they don’t always work all together. =) It was pretty uncomfortable, painful. But it was worth it knowing I am actually doing something to encourage our little one to come out and say hi! Mel (our midwife) also brought Caulophyllum, a homeopathic remedy to tone your uterus or make contractions regular. I take this 4 times a day for 3 days and then 3 days off… We had a really good visit. Mel stayed for about an hour, we chatted for most of it. I love having a midwife I am so comfortable with and enjoy! =) God is good. Now we are praying that I will go into labor sometime while she is on call! She is off call tomorrow and then on call from Friday to Sunday, then on Thursday she will be back on. (Hope that isn’t tooooo confusing!) Thanks everyone on checking up on us. We will be very prompt at letting you all know when things happen weather it’s this week or not for another few weeks!
~Debra
P.S. Mel said that I am 1.5 -2 cm dialated and something like 50% effaced… for those of you who know this pregnancy lingo stuff! =)
