California Fires

As some of you may have heard, fires recently broke out in much of Southern California. We have alot of friends and family down there and so we are keeping close tabs on the news. We got a message this evening from friends who were evacuated from their home near San Diego, they are safe but it’s a scary situation! The Santa Ana winds have made these fires particularly bad along with the dry year. Some areas in California have only received an inch of rain since January 1st. Many of the fires are considered ‘0% contained’ which basically means that they are at the mercy of the winds and on one report I read that the helicopters have been ineffective because the winds are scattering the water before it hits the ground. Our friend Lisa in California wrote about the fires today.

Pray for the people of California and especially for the fire fighters as they battle the blazes.

From Google News:

LOS ANGELES (AFP) — Hundreds of thousands of people fled as out-of-control wildfires raged across California on Monday, threatening homes and stretching emergency services to breaking point.
At least 13 fires were blazing throughout southern California with thousands of firefighters struggling to contain flames that have ripped through tinder-try hills and parkland following months of record low rainfalls.
One person has been killed, more than 20 people injured and 90,000 acres (36,500 hectares) destroyed in the wind-fueled fires, which forced the evacuation of an estimated 250,000 people in San Diego county alone.
