‘Reading’ Week

Phew! Exams are over! I didn’t feel like my last one went very well but I do know that I learned a lot while studying. It seemed that I studied things that were barely touched upon on the exam. Oh well, I am comforted by truth that I’m not here for marks or a certificate, but to simply learn French so that I can be effective when we go to Guinea. Now that exams are over I have reading week. I thought that reading week was meant to be a week of preparation for exams but we had ours early. I don’t mind, it gives us time to relax and have some fun. BUT, one thing I don’t want to do is not speak French for a week, it doesn’t take long to get rusty. Debra and I will have to practice when we go out and with each other. On Wednesday we are driving down to Ontario to spend some time with family, it’s our first time out of Québec since we left home in August. We’ll be in Ontario until Sunday and then drive home to resume classes once again. Debra still has her tutor tomorrow but after that we are home free!

pêcheOn Friday I visited the University library and found a large kids section. I borrowed a number of French children’s books - for Canaan? Nope! For me! Lots of pictures, short words and phrases are perfect for me. I did feel a little silly though reading a cardboard book at the bus stop :o) I did read one to Canaan before he went to bed and he seemed to enjoy it. We really hope and pray that Canaan will pick up French easily. We are doing our best to give him as much exposure as possible.

Ah I remember the days of reading children’s books in french, back when I took french immersion. Don’t worry about Canaan, children pick up languages much easier then adults. I am sure in a couple of years he will be giving you lessons!
