If you often read our blog you may remember us writing about a major strike taking place in Guinea early last year (click here for a list of posts about the strike). The president ended up agreeing to appoint a new primeminister of the peoples choosing and he did do so. A few days ago the unions threatened to strike again because they felt that the president had stepped over his bounds by firing the communications minister, something only the primeminister should be able to do. A strike was planned for this past Thursday but at the last moment the unions suspended the strikes for three months. Here is an information release from NTM:
“Early Thursday morning (just after midnight) the unions retracted their call for a nation wide strike in Guinea - suspending that strike for three months. During these three months the union leaders will meet with the government to define parameters of the President’s and the Prime Minister’s powers. Also, negotiations will continue until the end of January to decide who should be finally named as Minister of Information - an issue that was central in the union’s call for the strike. Up to this point there have been no negative public reactions to the suspension of the strike. Daily life in Conakry has returned to it’s usual routine. Thank you for your prayers, and please keep praying for Guinea.”
Keep Guinea in your prayers as the unions and government discuss these issues in the coming months.
