Those of you on facebook have probably noticed our statuses lately about how cold we are! Last week I called a local oil company to get the oil tank in our house filled up so that we could start up the furnace, what I found out wasn’t good. Unbeknownst to me (having never had to do this before), all oil tanks in Ontario have to be inspected every 10 years before being filled. The oil company here in town had no record of the inspection and so they couldn’t fill it. I called my landlord and he hadn’t known about the law nor had an inspection ever been done on our tank (keep in mind that our house has been empty for close to 20 years). I called a guy to come and inspect our tank and surprise surprise it failed. That left our landlord with two choices, pay for a new tank to be put in or get a whole new natural gas furnace. The problem with both solutions is that every heating company in the area is swamped with business and can’t get to it in the near future. When this whole ordeal started it was starting to get cool out but it wasn’t too bad at all in the house. Since then, the temperature has dropped drastically! There’s frost every morning and the temperature drops well below zero. I’m not sure how cold it is in the house either because the needle on the thermostat has gone as low as it can go. We have a few temporary solutions to help us along until the new furnace can be installed. We have an electric heater in Canaan’s room and also were lent a kerosene heater last night. We are also going to put diesel in our oil tank to run the furnace temporarily. We’re hoping that it will be enough to keep us going! We’ve also had plenty of people offer to let us stay with them and for that we are VERY grateful! Don’t worry, we’ll leave before it gets bad enough that we’ll freeze :o)
