“Bye bye two Greggs!”

Last night (or this morning, hard to tell which right now) I had the pleasure of taking our friend Jon Coe to the airport. Our airport trips are not usually short trips, they typically involve crossing the boarder into the US! The Toronto airport is only an hour and a half from here but it’s just so expensive to fly to and from that we are willing to drive a few more hours to Buffalo or Detroit. It was a long day, but nowhere near as long as this one. Coe’s flight was at 7:40 this morning so that meant leaving our place at 3am.  I originally planned on getting to bed early but one thing led to another when suddenly it was nearing midnight! I decided to just stay up until we had to leave, fearing that I would feel worse if I took a short nap. And judging by the look of Coe when I woke him up three hours later, I was right!

Canaan came with us because I wanted Debra to have a peaceful morning with just one child.  It was a long morning for Canaan but he is such a good traveler, I knew that he would be just fine with it. About two hours into our drive I missed a turn because I was having great conversation with Coe. I noticed right away and quickly found a place to turn around.  Suddenly there was a cop behind me with lights flashing. I pulled over, wondering what on earth I had done. They (there were two cops who came up to my car) grilled us about where we were going, why we had Canaan and informed me that I really should have a letter from Debra stating that I have permission to take Canaan over the border. Apparently it doesn’t matter that I’m his father. Canaan and I have gone over the border many times together and it’s never been a problem. They said they pulled me over because a lot of Neon’s get stolen and they wanted to check. I think that it was because it was 4am and it was something to do. My brother-in-law Gregg is a cop down in California and Canaan equates every cop he sees with Gregg. So as the two cops walk away Canaan yells, “Bye Bye two Greggs!!”. I got a good kick out of that one.

We made it the rest of the way to the airport without much delay and Coe was on his way home. Canaan and I stopped for breakfast at a Denny’s where the waitresses just adored him. He said please and thank you as often as he could and when we were on our way out he looked at our waitress and said, “I love you!”.  She was a little surprised and said something about liking him too. We made it back by 10:30 or so and are now relaxing for the rest of the afternoon.

Anyways, Canaan had me laughing the whole time so I thought I’d share some of his lines!

On this day..
