A few months ago we began the process of tilling and reseeding our front lawn. It’s been a long process full of interruptions but yesterday we were finally able to get back to it and so we spent the afternoon pulling weeds. Towards the middle of the afternoon Canaan went to the backyard with a few of the neighbourhood boys to play while I continued to work in the front yard. Moments later I heard Canaan screaming like I’ve never heard him scream. I ran back and found him absolutely covered in hornets. His head was completely coated in them. I grabbed him and as I ran with him up to the house I tried my best to knock as many off as possible. I remember looking at my own arms and noticing them covered with hornets as well. In the garage we stripped his clothes off of him and knocked off the last of the hornets, about a dozen of them followed us into the house. Emmaus had been in the front and came in just after Canaan. He hadn’t been stung outside but a few of the hornets that came off of Canaan then stung Emmaus. I’ve never seen them so upset. We got them up into the bath and while Debra stayed with them I hunted down the stray hornets in the house. Emmaus ended up with three stings, Canaan with quite a few more, I’m not sure how many exactly. We’re so thankful that it had been a cool day and Canaan was wearing a long-sleeved shirt and pants. He also has very thick hair which prevented him from getting many stings on his head.
Pray with us as we work through this with them, we want them to have a healthy fear of these kinds of things but not have a phobia. We’re so thankful that they are doing well and most of the swelling has gone down. Neither had any severe allergic reactions. Somehow, neither Debra nor I ended up with any bites. We’re so thankful for God’s protection.
