Sometimes God asks you to take a leap of faith. Sometimes that leap of faith might feel like jumping over a nice puddle after a spring rain. Sometimes that leap of faith feels like jumping from a roof into a swimming pool. Exhilarating and a little scary at the same time… But sometimes when God asks you to leap… this is no spring time puddle or a fun game, its like jumping on the edge of the highest cliff on earth. All He asks is that you trust him that you will be ok at the bottom. It doesn’t mean you won’t be scraped and bruised at the bottom after a long journey … but you will land safely.
Right now God has asked Norm and I to hold hands as tight as possible, trust Him and JUMP! This is one of those big jump off the cliff kind of leaps. Its mostly scary and yet… for adventurous people like us… its pretty stinking exciting as well!
And it is impossible to please God without faith. Anyone who wants to come to him must believe that God exists and that he rewards those who sincerely seek him. Hebrews 11:6
Well what is this leap of faith I am talking about? What has God asked us to do? What could be so scary and exciting at the same time? ADOPTION! Yep! You read that right. We are adopting!
We have wanted to adopt for many years. We had even started looking into it while we lived in Senegal. But God had never given us the go ahead and the timing has just never been right. Well after all these years of wanting to adopt God finally gave us the go ahead. We are thrilled!
We are open to adopting from anywhere, Canada, USA, Africa, anywhere! But after much research and prayer we have decided to try to adopt from Guinea, West Africa. We loved our time living and serving there in 2009 and made many close friends. Guinea is still a very dear place to us. We have not heard of anyone in Ontario adopting from Guinea. There are no adoption agencies in Ontario licensed to adopt from there. We are talking with two different adoption agencies about getting a one time license. Things are looking pretty positive, but also extremely complicated.
Our hope is to adopt a little baby girl. But only God knows who he has picked out for our family. We are so excited to meet our daughter one day! We don’t know how long this process could take. It could be a year or maybe two years, but we are hoping and praying for next spring. Please pray that all the paperwork goes quickly and smoothly. Sometimes with countries overseas the communication can be very very slow and also confusing.
Father to the fatherless, defender of widows— this is God, whose dwelling is holy. God places the lonely in families; he sets the prisoners free and gives them joy. Psalm 68:5–6
Please also pray for God to provide the finances for this adoption. We don’t have any clue how we will be paying for this. But like I said, God asked us to jump and trust him that we will land safely at the bottom. I firmly believe and have seen proven in my life many many times, that if God asks something of you he will provide the finances needed. At this point we don’t know how much we will be needing. We are guesstimating from our research that it could be around $30,000 plus travel expenses which would be around $10,000. We had saved up $4000 and we have already spent that on our training course required by the government and the home study, which we are currently in the middle of. This is one of the scary parts of all this. But its also a wonderful opportunity to trust God with everything. He has proven over and over that he provides for us. All we have to do is to be faithful with what he gives us and he will take care of the rest.
Now all glory to God, who is able, through his mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think. Ephesians 3:20
I’m sure there are still lots of questions you may have. And we have our own huge list of questions! We will continue updating and explaining this as we go. Please comment with questions you have and we will do our best answer them. In our next post we hope to go into more detail about the adoption process and where we are at in the whole thing.
